Interview with texas pandaa (Japan) - May 2010

Hello, Humans and Earthlings!

Last year, Azam did an interview with texas pandaa, one of our favourite bands and one of our influences in writing music. texas pandaa plays (romantic) pop songs with 'shoegazey' ambient touch mixed with sweet female vocals.

This interview was published in Japanese Studies Dept. Student Board Magazine, Cultural Studies Faculty of Gadjah Mada University as a small article about indie music in Japan. This interview also published as an one of the article (translated to Indonesian) of Lightning Sheets--an indiepop photo-copied fanzine managed by Fajar Martha.

This was written before texas pandaa release their 'Down in the Hole' album.

So, although it may be outdated, and because we are going to play with texas pandaa (yay! it's like a dream!), we're going to post it anyway. hahaha. #JapaneseWhispers

Here's the interview with Nadehiko of texas pandaa via email.

The interview was written in both English and Japanese.

1.Our first question is, Why 'texas pandaa' name? How did you get that name?
→「TEXAS PANDAA」という名前はどこから来ているのですか？

【English】
It's a long story with no deep meanings... Westarted out our band as a hobby/cover band. The band was called Texas BanjoGurentai - "Texas" because we like steaks, and "Banjo Gurentai(total hoodlums)" because we were all mean little kids. The Japanese havethis wierd habit of shortening words (e.g. we are often called"teki-pan" short for texas pandaa) so we were called"teki-ban" back then. "ba" and "pa" look quitealike in Japanese letters so most people got confused and started calling us"teki-pan" which eventually became Texas Pandaa. Two "a"sjust because we liked the laid-back-nothing-serious look of the word Hawaii,which has two "i"s.

深い意味はないのですが・・・。もともとわたしたちは趣味で始めたカバーバンドでした。その当時のバンド名は「テキサス万丈愚連隊」と言いました。メンバーみんなステーキが好きなので、「ビーフ」のイメージが強い「テキサス」、そしてわたしたちは若い頃は暴れん坊だったので「万丈愚連隊」という言葉を選びました。日本人は言葉を省略するのが好きで、例えばブラッドピットのことを「ブラピ」と言ったり、マクドナルドのことを「マック」といったりします。それと同様に、「テキサス万丈愚連隊」は「テキバン」と呼ばれていました。見ての通り、「バ」と「パ」は似ているので、次第にみんなこんがらがって「テキパン」と呼ぶようになりました。そこから逆発生的に、「テキサスパンダ」という名前になったのです。最後に「a」が二つあるのは、ハワイには「i」が二つあって、そののどかな感じが好きでしたので、わたしたちも「a」を二つにしてみました。

2. How did you guys get together and play musictogether in this band? What's the story?
→バンド結成の経緯を教えてください。

【English】
We all went to same unviersity in Tokyo and that'swhere we met. Asako (guitar & vocals), Mikiko (bass & chorus), and Kaz(guitar) were in the same grade. Nadehiko (drums) is several years senior. Wewere members of the same music "circle" (after-school-activity-groupscommon in Japanese schools) during our university years. We were just a hobbyband, covering songs for fun.

メンバー全員同じ大学に通っていました。アサコ、ミキコ、カズは同学年で、なで彦は先輩にあたります。同じ「軽音楽同好会」というサークルに所属しており、趣味でいろいろな曲をカバーしていました。

3. Could you please tell us about your influencein music?
→影響を受けた音楽を教えてください。

【English】
When we were playing as the fore-mentionedhobby/cover band, we often covered The Sundays, The Darling Buds, Lisa Loebetc, mainly female vocals - naturally. We were right in the middle of theso-called "Alternative Music" movement when we started out, andthat's where we mostly got our influences from.

コピーバンドをやっていた時は、良く「The Sundays」や「The Darling Buds」などのイギリスのインディーズバンド、そしてLisa Loebなど、主に女性ボーカルのポップバンドをコピーしていました。わたしたちは丁度「オルターナティブ・ミュージック」というジャンルが最盛期の頃にバンド活動を始めたので、そのジャンルのバンドたちにたくさん影響を受けました。

4. To each member of texas pandaa : 'who/what'syour favourite mainstream and indie musicians? What music that you're listeningin to lately?
→この質問はTEXASPANDAAのメンバー一人一人への質問です：一番好きなメインストリーム／インディーズ・アーティストは誰ですか？最近、どのような音楽を聴いていますか？

【English】
Asako: The Sundays, The Darling Buds, David Lynch,etc
Mikiko: Lisa Loeb, spangle call lilli line,natsumen etc
Kaz: REM, Coldplay, Mercury Rev, Yo La Tengo, etc
Nadehiko: swervedriver, Aimee Mann, etc

There's tons of bands we listen to - mostlyforeign bands, some Japanese indies, but we rarely listen to any Japanesemainstream artists.

5.? What's the story behind your music andsongwriting?
→TEXAS PANDAAの曲の背景や、曲の作り方を教えてください。

【English】
Asako and Mikiko usually come up with partialideas (e.g. Suddenly:www.texaspandaa.com/songs_in_the_making/090108_suddenly.mp3) then we spendhours and hours, often extending well into months, jamming and finalizing itinto a song. Most ideas are triggered from actual personal experiences - sadand heart-breaking. They are directly reflected in the lyrics.

When the songs are finalized, then we do apre-production recording by ourselves to check how we should proceed with theactual recording. This again takes several weeks to months. We need thisprocess in order to make sure we would be able to record our songs efficientlywithout having to make big adjustments during the actual recording. Recordingstudios are quite expensive!

We often fight a lot about the vocals - whichnotes to use, what kind of tone the songs should be sung in, how a word shouldbe pronunciated etc etc - even after the song itself has been fixed. We don'twant to do that at the actual recording.

だいたいアサコとミキコが曲の部分的なアイディアを持ってきます。（例：Suddenly:www.texaspandaa.com/songs_in_the_making/090108_suddenly.mp3）このアイディアを元に、何時間も、何ヶ月もスタジオでジャムりながら曲に仕上げていきます。ほとんどのアイディアは失恋などの悲しい実体験がベースになっていて、直接歌詞に反映されています。

曲がすべて完成すると、本番レコーディングの前にプリプロダクション・レコーディングを行います。これは本番のレコーディングで大きな調整をしなくて済むよう、作業の流れを確認するためにも必要なプロセスです。レコーディングには時間も予算も限られていますからね。

曲作りやレコーディングで一番時間が掛かるのは、ボーカルです。どのようなメロディーにするか、歌い方はどうするか、発音はどうか、など、曲が完成した後でも何度も見直していきます。

6. Have you guys ever had the opportunity to playoutside of Japan? If so, where?
→海外でライブをやったことはありますか？

【English】
Only once - in Taiwan, 2008. We were invited toplay the opening act for Yo La Tengo.

1度だけ、2008年に台湾でライブをやりました。Yo La Tengoのオープニング・アクトとして誘われたのです。

7. If you had the opportunity to play againoutside of Japan, where would you like to go?
→もしまた海外でライブができるとしたら、どこでやりたいですか？

【English】
Anywhere! We would love to visit all kinds ofplaces and meet our fans outside Japan. But realistically speaking, it's quitedifficult since we all have our day jobs, and transportation with all our gearscould become quite expensive...

機会があれば、本当に、どこでも行きたいです！海外のファンのみなさまにも、本当に会いたいです！ただ残念なことに、メンバー全員仕事がありますし、また機材を持って海外に行くのも費用的にかなりの自己負担になってしまうので、なかなか行けないのが現状です。

8. So you're going to release your next album,"Down in the Hole". Could you please tell us about the preview,sneek-peek, or the story behind about that album ?
→『Down in The Hole』というアルバムが近日リリース予定ですが、このアルバムについて、少し背景などを紹介してください。

【English】
Our fans might be a little surprised at how pop"Down In the Hole" became. We are often referred to as "shoegazemusic" but that is not how we think about ourselves recently. We havereached a point where we came to think of ourselves as more of avocal/chorus-oriented band, so we wanted to make an album that transcended suchimage. We have put much time in vocal/chorus recording compared to our previousguitar-oriented albums.

『Down In the Hole』を聴いて、そのポップさに今までのファンの多くは驚くことと思います。わたしたちはしばし「シューゲーザー」と呼ばれますが、最近はそのように呼ばれることに居心地の悪さを感じています。わたしたちはむしろボーカル／コーラスに重点を置くバンドだと思っているのです。なので、今作は「シューゲーザー」というイメージを払拭するアルバムにしたいと考えていました。今までのようにギター・レコーディングに多くの時間を割くのではなく、ボーカル／コーラスにほとんどの時間を費やしました。

9. What do you think about the mainstream musicscene in Japan ?
→日本のメインストリーム音楽について、どう思いますか？

【English】
I think mainstream music is boring. Almost everysong is "cut out" and "predictable" and digitalized, andthe lyrics are so naive. It's not fun. The indie scene is much more excitingfor those who care a lot about music.

【日本語】
メインストリーム音楽は、ほとんどの曲が型にはまってて、曲の展開が予測可能で、デジタル化されてて、歌詞がナイーブで、面白くないと思います。本当に音楽が好きな人にとっては、インディーズのシーンの方が断然エキサインティングで面白いと思います。

10. Last one, what's your message to any TexasPandaa listeners outside of Japan ?
→海外のファンに、何かメッセージをお願いします。

【English】
Thank you all for your support! It is such anhonor for us to be listened to overseas, and we are 120% grateful. You are theones who kept us moving for all these years. Down In the Hole would never haveseen the light of day if not for the constant encouragement from you guys. Yourencouragements were lifesavers on many a dark night. Please invite us to playin your country! Thank you so much!

Removal of MOON EP Synthetic version

Hi, humans.

So we decided to remove the MOON EP Synthetic version
It was hosted on mediafire, it was promoted on this blog, our myspace, and shoegazeralive's blog.

We don't want people to misunderstand, that we use vocaloid hatsune miku.
We already dropped it. We move to real human vocal. We use real instrument now. We are not a lonely bedroom musician. We need to face the real gig. Performing real stuffs. Interacting with real humans.

It's gone forever. Except if there are some people who re-upload it.

We will, however, record the human version of it. I know some of you might prefer Hatsune Miku's voice than Yusan Finn's voice. But, oh, well, we don't want to have the same voice like those anime soundtrack's composer. Hatsune Miku is everywhere. In this anime, in that anime, in that release of J-Pop records, in poster, forums, even in hentai doujinshis!

But there is only one Yusan Finn.
And we like her tiny-bity-soft-breathy cute voice~
Ofcourse her vocal range won't match that robot. But, oh, well, at least she can have a conversation with the audience----and improvise easily ;)

So if you guys love the synthetic version, thanks very much for your liking. We really appreciate it.
But, sorry, we won't use it anymore. It will be a bootleg.

Paraparanoid did COTD's Mexico cover! + New support member!

Hi, how are you?
Update:

We did Coaltar of the Deepers's Mexico cover today. It's for the Coaltar of the Deepers fan contest held in here.

We only recorded and mixed the main theme version, our plan is to add some nice touch and longer ambient ending.

But because we misread the contest deadline [it's tommorow :O !]
We only could record and mix the main theme without our additional touches in the ending.

Oh well, but it's fine. We added a portion of spaceman's ambient to the song so it will be a bit different from the original COTD's Mexico.

As usual, we always did lo-fi recording. The song was recorded in one of the classrooms in the campus! It was pretty noisy there!
